It will take at least three years for farmers in Maharashtra to get electricity during day time, state Power Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule told the Legislative Assembly today.
"Previous government had made several announcements without any planning in place. (However) We are working hard to bring a proper plan for implementation. Going by current speed of the administration and necessary clearances, it will take three years for farmers to get electricity during day time," Bawankule said, responding to queries regarding his department.
He told the House that the state government is trying to make solar power available for operating water pumps of farmers.
"The state is planning to cover 90% farmers' pumps, which will receive solar power feeders. The chief minister is going to inaugurate one such project in Jalgaon soon," Bawankule said.
He said that generation of solar power will enable the state government to provide power during day time to farmers in some areas.
"I am aware of the demand from farmers to provide electricity during day, but as the demand from cities and towns is higher, we have to give power supply to farmers in night time. Many farmers have protested against it, as it puts a lot of stress on them. Those, who live away from their farms face major inconvenience," conceded the minister.
He said some 300-acre land in Jalgaon district has been transferred to Power department for setting up a major solar power plant.

"The electricity generated through this plant will be utilised to meet the needs of farmers. A detailed project report is also ready," Bawankule said.
The minister said the current demand for electricity supply in Maharashtra is 21,900 MW.
"With better coordination with our staff located in various areas, not a single transformer was tripped and power supply was not affected. There will be further improvement in the quality services," Bawankule said.
