Mahabubnagar police chalkout plan for rehab of 'Joginis'

To facilitate a hassle-free rehabilitation of 'Joginis' (a local term for Devadasi system), district police are collaborating with several agencies for total eradication of this practice.
A survey done by the district police shows that though the system is publicly criticised by many, it is privately promoted.
A rough estimate shows that there are about 2,000 Joginis in Mahabubnagar district alone (most of them have been rehabilitated), the official said.
Mahabubnagar SP Rema Rajeshwari, who today inaugurated a tailoring centre at Utkoor a remote village in Narayanpet division as part of providing alternate livelihood to the rehabilitated Joginis, said police has decided to join hands with many agencies to facilitate their rehabilitation. During the vacation period children of Joginis will be given free computer training by the district police.
The SP further said she has decided to make Joginis part of her ongoing project as a fellow of the Ananta-Aspen Centre for Global Leadership Development.

The district police have collaborated with Jan Shikshan Sansthan (a scheme under Ministry of Human Resource Development of Government Of India) to enable vocational skills for them under non-formal system.
"The target group will become self sustained and lead independent life with the vocational skills acquired through Jan Shikshan Sansthans," Rema explained.
As many as 50 Joginis are being provided with sewing machines and more will be trained in the days to come.
With the help of local police, the team christened as 'Jogini Vyavastha Vyethireka Porata Samiti (JVVPS)' led by its convener Hajamma are working towards total eradication of this practice, an official release said.
Jogini system is a social evil prevalent in many parts of Telangana, particularly in Mahabubnagar district, the release said.
