The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly was adjourned for the day today after two adjournments of 30 minutes and 15 minutes over demands to discuss non-payment of financial assistance to Vidarbha's rain-hit farmers.
Devendra Phadanvis (BJP) while moving the adjournment motion asked the Speaker to adjourn the House and take up the issue of non-payment of financial help to farmers affected by excess rainfall in the Vidarbha region and rise in number of suicides by the farmers in recent past.
He said the state government neglects the cause of farmers and they are given paltry amounts.
Displaying a cheque of Rs 80 given to a Wardha farmer Somba Bawde, Phadanvis also displayed other cheques of smaller amounts and handed them over to the Speaker.
After he said that cotton growers are in distress since they do not get adequate prices for their produce, he was joined by Sudhir Mungattiwar (BJP) who accused the state government of playing a cruel joke on farmers.
Mungattiwar said that it is an irony that on one hand wedding invites of some ministers range from Rs 3,000 to Rs 10,000 and on the other hand, farmers are denied their legitimate dues due to sheer apathy.
