Maharashtra government to constitute urban police machinery

The Maharashtra government has decided to constitute an independent urban police machinery and a separate cell withing the existing police set up to tackle encroachments and urban crimes in Thane, Pune and Mira-Bhayander.
Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil said that a separate urban police machinery would be set up in the municipal corporation administration, while a separate cell would be set up in the Economic Offences Wing of the police commissioner's office.
The Maharashtra home department would provide the staff for the new set up and accordingly 106 posts have been sanctioned in Thane, 158 posts in Pune and 70 posts in Mira-Bhayender, he said.
He said that municipal corporations have submitted resolutions passed at their general body meeting about the need to set up the new machinery.
Encroachments and illegal constructions in urban areas would be curbed by this machinery, he said.
