Main accused in murder of ex-MLA arrested

Jaspreet Singh, the main accused in the murder of his uncle and former MLA Malkit Singh Keetu, has been arrested along with an accomplice after exchange of fire with Barnala police team near Chandigarh.
Acting on a tip-off, Jaspreet and his associate Rashpal Singh were arrested yesterday, SSP Snehdeep Sharma said today.
The duo shot at police personnel and in the retaliatory fire, Rashpal received bullet injuries, the SSP said.
A .32 bore pistol was recovered from the Jaspreet, Sharma said.
Jaspreet was taken to Barnala last evening whereas Rashpal was admitted to a Dera Bassi hospital where his condition is said to be stable, he said.
Barnala MLA Malkit Singh Keetu was shot dead at his Bilaspur residence on October 29 last year allegedly over a property dispute.
Jaspreet was also wanted by Barnala police for his alleged role in cases of attempt to murder.
Moga police chief Surjit Singh Grewal said two other nephews of the deceased former Shiromani Akali Dal MLA -- Gurpreet Singh and Harpreet Singh -- were arrested last year while another accused, Angrez Singh, was apprehended in the first week of April.
