Punjab Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majithia, who has been accused of being involved in the recently unearthed multi-crore drug racket, today hit back, saying Congress, when in power in 2002, had set the alleged kingpin Jagdish Bhola free after he had been arrested earlier.
Slamming state Congress chief Partap Singh Bajwa's demands for CBI probe into the case, Majithia alleged that Bajwa was behind Bhola's release then.
In December 2001, the Akali-BJP government had arrested Bhola from Bathinda with a truck full of poppy husk, the minister said, and alleged that the Congress government which succeeded in 2002, set him free, under pressure from Bajwa.
Swearing on his children, Majithia said Congress and Bajwa were trying to malign his name and misguide people for vested political interests.
He said Bajwa was afraid that the truth against him would come out during the investigation, and was seeking a CBI probe into the case.
Alleged druglord and dismissed Punjab Police officer Jagdish Bhola was arrested last year in the multi-crore drug racket with others by the Punjab Police who has been investigating the case.
Earlier this month, Bhola revealed that Majithia was involved in the racket, triggering a political furore between the Congress and Akali leaders.
Congress, led by Bajwa, has been continuously demanding that the case be handed over to CBI and that Majithia be dismissed from the government. Rejecting the demands, the Akali government accused Bhola of giving a "political colour" to the case.
