Police soon cordoned off the area and vehicular traffic towards Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Phagwara, Banga-Nawanshehr and Chandigarh was halted.
Eyewitnesses said the tanker first rammed into a divider near the crossing and skidded a few feet, before turning turtle in a roadside pit.
Fire tenders and heavy cranes were pressed into service and it took a long time for fire fighters and other officials to get the tanker on its wheels, fearing leakage, police said.
