The Puri-based artist, known for his sculptures that send out social messages, chose to draw a sand work to highlight the issue of climate change at the championship.

Patnaik's sculpture of a mermaid pleading for human effort to save the oceans was declared the winner.

"Indian culture is diverse and I get my motivation from there. An artist should always be thoughtful, creativity just follows," he said.

Patnaik said that there were a lot of Indians present at the competition who cheered for him and after he won the competition President Pratibha Patil sent him a congratulatory message. He didn't expect that on returning back to India people will be so welcoming.

The 35-year-old now wants to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and give him a picture of his sand art.

"I haven't received any reaction from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh or Cultural Ministry but I want to meet him and give him a picture of my sand sculpture. I have also contacted them but haven't received any answer yet," he added.
