The Kerala cabinet today approved the proposed Malayalam language bill, which will be introduced in the coming Assembly session starting on November 30.
"The Malayalam language bill has received the cabinet approval and will be presented in the coming session of the assembly," Chief Minister Oommen Chandy today said.
Malayalam language was conferred the classical language status in 2013.
As per the Official Languages Act, 1969, in the state English and Malayalam are the official languages.
The government has now come out with guidelines directing the secretariat, government, quasi-government, autonomous institutions and corporations to make Malayalam their official medium of communication.
A section of writers and cultural personalities had criticised the Congress-led UDF government for the delay in implementing the Malayalam Language Act, which envisages making learning of Malayalam compulsory at various levels of education.
