Maldives' Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party chief meets PM

This was conveyed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during his meeting with chief of Maldives' Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) Ahmed Thasmeen Ali.

Ali, here on an official visit since July 31, called on Singh in the morning.

"The Prime Minister conveyed that India was committed to working with Maldives for the economic development and progress of Maldives.

"In this regard, it was hoped that all the stakeholders in Maldives would work together to resolve the current situation in the Maldives and help in maintaining an environment of peace and stability in the country," a statement by the Ministry of External Affairs said.

Ali also met National Security Adviser Shivshanker Menon and Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai.

During the discussions the close ties of friendship and cooperation between India and Maldives were underlined.

Ali was accompanied by Abdulla Mausoom, MP (DRP Parliamentary Group Deputy Leader, President-DRP Commercial Wing), Asim Ahmed, Minister of Education, Ali Azim, MP (DRP Council Member) and Hassan Saeed, Minister of State of Foreign Affairs during his visit to the country.

Ali also addressed an audience at the Observer Research Foundation here on 'Challenges and Problems of an Infant Democracy - The Maldives Experience'.
