Male rhino shot dead in Kaziranga
Press Trust of India Jorhat (Assam) Close on the heels of a rhino killed in Kaziranga National Park in Assam on April 30, another male adult pachyderm was gunned down here today and its horn taken away by poachers, taking the number of pachyderms killed this year to ten.
Hearing gun shots in the wee hours today, the Park personnel launched a search operation and recovered the carcass of the rhino with its horn sawn off from near Arikati camp, under Agaratoli Range on the extreme north of the park, Forest department officials said.
Altogether 11 empty cartridges of AK-47 bullets were recovered from near the carcass, the officials said.
On April 30 a male rhino was killed by poachers and its horn taken away from near Borgung Camp on the western side of the Burapahar Range of the World Heritage Site.
Used cartridges of an AK-47 rifle and .303 rifle were also recovered from near the carcass then.
