West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today remembered Tapasi Malik, who was raped and burnt to death during the Singur agitation over land acquisition in 2006.
She also urged people to never forget the 'martyrs' of political violence during the Left front rule.
"On this day in 2006, Tapasi Malik was brutally raped and burnt to death in Singur. Let us also never forget the martyrs of the 34 years of violence under the Left Front," Banerjee wrote on her Twitter handle this morning.
Malik was a member of the Save Singur Farmland Committee. Her charred remains were recovered from the Tata Motors' Nano factory site in Singur on December 18, 2006.
Singur witnessed large scale protests in 2006, when the CPM-led Left Front tried to acquire land for the factory.
The agitation that lasted for months made headlines across the world and catapulted then opposition leader Mamata Banerjee to limelight.
