Mamata rues condition of highways in N Bengal

Banerjee, who is on a visit to north Bengal, told newsmen the state of NH31 AND NH34, the two major highways which link the various noth Bengal districts were in 'terrible' shape causing the people to suffer.

She said spoken to executive engineers of National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) in Jalpaiguri to know the problems behind the lack of development efforts and said if needed the state would appeal to the Centre on this.

North Bengal Development Minister Goutam Deb said the roads, specially rural roads taken over by NHAI are all in bad shape causing difficulty in surface communication between north Bengal districts as well as connecting south Bengal and the North East. Teesta and Jaldhaka bridges which are part of the national highways were in bad shape too.

To protest against this Trinamool Youth Congress and Trinamool Congress leaders would launch a dharna at the NHAI office in Siliguri tomorrow, he added.
