Congress today dismissed as "baseless," West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's allegation that the party was conspiring with other opposition parties to stall the panchayat elections in the state.
Alleging that the Trinamool Congress government was trying to snatch the powers of the State Election Commission with which it was at loggerheads, WBPCC chief Pradip Bhattacherjee said, "Congress is not involved in any conspiracy. It is baseless.
"Congress wants primacy of the SEC in holding the rural polls, but the TMC government wants to snatch its powers," he said.
"We are behind the commission to uphold its primacy in holding the polls. But the TMC is conspiring to defer them," Bhattacharjee said.
At an election meeting in Junglemahal earlier in the day, the Chief Minister had alleged that CPI(M), Congress and BJP were conspiring to stall the elections as they were afraid of defeat.
