His family has, however, alleged lack of proper treatment and apathy by prison authorities as the reason behind his death last evening.
Arvind Kumar (25), resident of Shyamnagar, was in the district jail since February 8 this year for his suspected role in the dowry death of his sister-in-law and was being treated in the prison hospital after he fell sick on June 3, a police spokesperson said.
He was suffering from stomach ache and jaundice, police said. Arvind's relatives have blamed the authorities for not providing him any treatment till June 18 adding that it was only after they wrote a letter to the city magistrate that he was admitted. They claim that his treatment began too late.
Arvind was shifted to Ursula hospital after his condition deteriorated and later to Halet hospital where he died.
Police has sent the body for post-mortem.
