A man who allegedly cheated government employees by promising cheap LTC package, was arrested from Turkman Gate here, police said today.
Twenty four-year-old Aftab Ahmed Siddiqui alias Rajeev Kumar was arrested in connection with two separate cases of cheating registered at Chandni Mahal and Neb Sarai area. Rs 65,000 cash was also recovered from him, they said.
The incident came to light on March 5 when one Israr Ahmed, who works as computer programmer at Jamia Milia Islamia University, told police that he received an e-mail on January 22 regarding cheap LTC package from one Rajeev Kumar.
"The complainant paid LTC amount in two installments of Rs 30,000 and 35,000 to Rajeev Kumar and he delivered the confirmed Air India flight ticket to Ahmed on 25 January. The accused also gave receipt of amount signed as Rajeev Kumar.
"On February 20, the complainant checked the status of his tickets, which was showing as cancelled. Complainant tried to contact him, but the phone was found switched off," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central), Alok Kumar said, adding that a case was registered based on the Ahmed's complaint and investigation started.
After technical surveillance, a raid was conducted at Madanpur Dabas, where it was found that Rajeev Kumar was actually one Aftab Ahmed Siddiqui and had previously worked in in a travel agency of Dwarka. His whereabouts were, however, not known. Following sustained efforts Siddiqui was nabbed from Turkman Gate, police said.
During interrogation, Siddiqui revealed that he took the e-mail addresses of the Central government officers from their department websites and sent e-mails luring them with cheap LTC offer in lieu of cash payment of the LTC. After receipt of the money, he delivered forged Air Tickets, police said.
He further told police that he had offered these LTC offers via e-mails to more than 50 persons and received cash for complete package from Ahmed (Rs 65,500) and one Ashish Kumar, working in IGNOU, (Rs 1,80,000).
