A 25-year-old man allegedly involved in a liquor-smuggling racket has been arrested and a major consignment of the contraband seized, police said today.
Ajay Dhaka, a resident of Dhikoli village in Uttar Pradesh, was apprehended from Andrews Ganj Flyover by the Crime Branch after it received a tip off that he would pass from the flyover with illicit liquor.
A tempo with 132 bottles and over five thousand quarters of illicit liquor in 124 cartons was seized, they said.
"Dhaka used to buy liquor from Haryana and smuggled it to other states as per demand. He made huge profits on each trip while the state government of the concerned states incurred heavy losses of excise duty," said Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Ravindra Yadav.
"The price of liquor is lower in Haryana and Arunachal Pradesh as compared to Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. The rate in Haryana is Rs 1,500 per carton while in Delhi, it is Rs 2,500. This huge difference is actually encouraging illicit trade of liquor," said Yadav.
Many small traders and criminals are reportedly indulging in this business to earn quick money, police said.
