The Anti-Extortion Cell (AEC) of Thane police has arrested a 23-year-old man, who had come out of prison two months ago, for illegal possession of arms.
Six pistols and 15 cartridges were recovered from Semesh Shaikh, a resident of Virar, last evening, said assistant commissioner of police N T Kadam of Crime Branch.
Shaikh was released from jail on January 11 this year after serving three and a half years in a case of cheating, he said.
Police were now probing how he procured the weapons and who was he trying to sell them, Kadam said.
Earlier, a case of robbery was registered against him at Ambarnath police station and another case under the Arms Act was registered at Kandivali police station, the ACP added.
A fresh case was registered at the Kopri police station in Thane against him following his arrest last evening.
