A 30-year-old man was allegedly beaten up and looted of Rs 25,000 by four policemen, an official said today.
The policemen, attached with traffic branch under Vasai division and allegedly involved in the assault and loot, have been arrested.
The incident took place on April 18 near Charoti on Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway, when the victim, Madankumar Mahato, a driver, was on his way from Silvasa to Mumbai airport, Kasa Police Station Inspector Ravindra Magar told PTI.
He was thrashed by the four policemen - Raju Chavan, Suresh Rathod, Raju Shaikh and Jitendra Chowgule - who posed as Crime Branch personnel. The four alleged that Mahato was selling gutkha, which is banned in the State, Magar said.
As per the complaint, they forcibly took him to an ATM and made him to withdraw Rs 25,000 which they pocketed and fled.
The four were apprehended yesterday, the officer said, adding they have been remanded in police custody till April 24 after a case was registered under various sections of IPC.
