A 35-year-old unemployed man has been booked for allegedly abetting the suicide of his wife in Bhayander area of the district, police said today.
Praful Patil and his wife Bharti (32) used to have frequent quarrels over the family facing severe financial crisis as the former was not earning, Bhayander police station inspector Bhaskar Phule said.
Praful allegedly ill-treated his wife and also used to beat her, he said.
During one such quarrel, the accused reportedly asked his wife: "How is it that so far you have not committed suicide?" the police officer said quoting a complaint filed by the victim's family members.
This further aggravated the couple's differences following which the wife allegedly set herself on fire at their home in Morgaon village of Bhayander on January 5 this year, he said.
She was admitted to hospital where she succumbed to her burns on January 17, police said.
Following the autopsy report issued recently, the woman's family members yesterday lodged a police complaint against Praful.
Subsequently, an offence was registered against him under section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the IPC, police said adding that a search was on to nab him.
