Accused S V Sontosh Kumar, who worked as an appraiser at the Machilipatnam branch of the state-run bank, used to replace original gold jewellery with fake ones and in this manner cheated the bank to the tunes of Rs 26 lakh, said Robertsonpet police station sub-inspector Habeeb Basha.
"We have registered a case based on the complaint lodged by the branch manager. The fraud was reportedly going on for over a year now, and it came to light yesterday during the checking of records and gold ornaments," he said.
