A 44-year-old AIIMS staffer was allegedly cheated by two men at a national bank inside the hospital premises, police said on Saturday.

Vijay Kumar, an attendant at AIIMS and a resident of Ansari Nagar, had gone to the bank with his wife Kusum on Friday morning and withdrew about Rs 2 lakh, the police said.

A man and his son approached the couple and said some notes in the denomination of Rs 2,000 and Rs 500 were counterfeit. The couple believed them and handed over the cash to them to check for any counterfeit currency.

Sensing something suspicious, Kumar asked them to give his money back, but the accused tried to flee.

The couple raised an alarm and ran behind the accused. A few metres outside the hospital, the son was caught with the help of some people and Rs 82,000 were recovered from his possession.

Police said that the arrested accused has been identified as Sadik Zafar while his father identified as Zafar Shah is absconding. Zafar has over Rs 1 lakh and police are trying to nab him, they added.
