Two police personnel have been suspended in connection with the alleged torture and death of the man.
Rinku Kumar was arrested on December 13 for allegedly smuggling 67 pouches of illicit liquor which were seized by a police team and was released on bail two days later, a police officer said.
He said during the night, Kumar complained of pain and was shifted to Government Medical College and Hospital Jammu where he passed away yesterday morning.
As the protest grew, police ordered a magisterial enquiry into the entire incident and ordered suspension of two police personnel.
"We have suspended two policemen from the police station and ordered an inquiry into the entire incident," SSP Jammu Sunil Gupta said.
