Shyam Mitra, who hails from Durgapur in West Bengal and a postgraduate in Computer Application, was arrested from his residence here following a tip-off.
"Mitra had met officials of private firm KATM Ventures and introduced himself as Bholanath Biswas, a senior officer of SAIL," chief PRO of Gurgaon Police Manish Sehgal said.
"Mitra signed a deal with the company for the supply of 2,700 tonnes billets, valued at Rs 3 crore. The consignment was to be delivered in Nepal, but Mitra later fled with Rs 3 crore which was deposited in his bank account," Sehgal said.
Technical surveillance was mounted with the help of cyber cell of the Gurgaon police to nab the accused, he said.
"Police recovered a Bolero car which Mitra had purchased using the money, SAIL fake letter head, laptop, Rs 2.52 crore and mobile data card from Mitra's possession," he said.
Mitra has been sent to five-day police custody by a Gurgaon court.
