Vinith (21) was killed on the spot while his friend Ramu (20) suffered minor injuries, they said.
The two were crossing the field to go to a bus stand when the mishap occurred.
The owner of the sugarcane field has been arrested for erecting the fence without permission, police said.
Villagers said such illegal fences are put up by farmers to prevent entry of wild animals from the nearby forests, which foray out in search of food and damage crop.
