Man fleeing louts dies in road accident; five held

An ambulance driver and his four friends were arrested today, a day after an 18-year-old man they were chasing died in a road accident near Charkop village in the city, the police said.
According to police, the driver was allegedly harassing the fiancee of the victim, identified as Nilesh Patel.
The woman, who works at a hospital in suburban Malad, brought the matter to the notice of Patel, he said.
Patel approached the driver last night and told him to stay from the woman, the officer said, adding that the driver asked Patel to break off his engagement with the woman as he was in love with her.
The officer said that an argument broke out between Patel and his two friends and the driver.
The driver and his friends tried to overpower Patel and his friends, but they fled on a bike.

However, the accused started chasing Patel's bike, the officer said.
When Patel was taking a turn near Charkop village, he crashed into a tempo and died while his friend, who was riding pillion, sustained injuries, he said.
Meanwhile, Patel's another friend approached the police today and recorded his statement, following which the driver and his friends were arrested, the officer added.
They have been booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, the official said.
They were produced in a court here, which remanded them in judicial custody for two weeks, the official said.
