A local court Wednesday convicted a man in a case of acid attack on a woman over eight years ago and awarded him five years of rigorous imprisonment.
Chief Judicial Magistrate Pranati Saha, while pronouncing the verdict, also slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 on Gobardhan Mishra (36) of Bila Sahi here.
In case of default, the convict would undergo another three months of rigorous imprisonment, the court ruled.
The court also ordered for payment of compensation to the 23-year-old acid attack victim.
The amount would be decided by the district legal aid services, said associate public prosecutor Rajendra Kumar Sabat.
Mishra had thrown acid on the woman near a school at Nilakantheswar Nagara here on February 12, 2010, when she was returning from a temple after paying her obeisance.
He had attacked the woman over some old enmity and she suffered burn injuries in her face, hands and legs. She was first admitted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital here and then shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack.
