A local court has sentenced a 33-year-old man from the district to rigorous imprisonment of five years for driving his 21-year-old wife to commit suicide over dowry of Rs 500 in 2002.
Kalyan Additional Sessions Court judge A Z Telgote in his order pronounced recently held Shaniwar Soma Warghada guilty under various sections of the IPC for abetting the suicide of his wife Mamta.
The court, however, acquitted Warghada's mother Devkibai (50) for want of evidence, while imposing fine of Rs 500 on the convict.
According to the prosecution, Mamta was subjected to harassment by the accused and his family members for dowry since her marriage.
Fed up of the harassment and her inability to bring the money, Mamta set herself ablaze on August 14, 2002 at her husband's residence in Chinchavali of Ambernath.
She died on way to hospital the next day.
Accepting the prosecution's argument, the judge said, "the deceased was constrained to end her life within five months after marriage.
"The perusal of the testimony of prosecution witness Kisan Hindola, the victim's father, shows the deceased gave dying declaration to him saying she was fed up with the torture by her husband. In my opinion, the evidence discussed above, proves the cruelty as required under Section 498-A of IPC," the judge said.
