A court here today awarded death penalty to a man in a murder case.
District and Sessions Judge Kuldeep Singh held Khushwinder Singh guilty of killing the six members of a family by pushing them into Bhakra canal in June last year and pronounced the verdict on him.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs 29,000 on him.
Singh had planned the murder after he came to know about the family receiving an amount of Rs 42 lakh on selling two bighas of land, prosecution sources said.
Singh and his wife Manjit Kaur, who was the niece of the family head Gurmail Singh(70), came to know from his daughter Jasmine Kaur about the drinking habits of his brother Gurinder Singh.
The accused assured the family of the help of a 'baba' in curing his habits and also took Rs two lakh for the cause.
Later, he called the deceased- Gurmail, his wife Paramjit Kaur, son Gurinder Singh, son-in-law Rupinder Singh, grand-son Jaskirat Singh and grand-daughter Prabhsimran Kaur near a well and pushed them into it.
However, Jasmine survived and reported the matter to the police station who later arrested the accused.
