A man employed by an LIC agent at Bhayander was sentenced to one year jail on the charge of criminal breach of trust in an August 2017 case.

Thane Judicial Magistrate First Class P D Chavan, in his order given yesterday, held Avinash alias Shridhar M Haldankar (29) guilty and awarded the sentence. He also slapped a fine of Rs 1,500 on him.

Prosecutor Jaishree Korde told the court that Haldankar used to work in the office of the LIC agent.

"On August 21, 2017, the agent gave a sum of Rs 76,000 and some policy documents of a client to the accused for submission in LIC office," Korde said.

The agent kept waiting outside the LIC branch for the accused to return. However, the accused vanished from the scene with the money, Korde said.

An offence had been registered against Haldankar with Naya Nagar police station at Bhayander, after which he was arrested and tried.
