A special court here has convicted a man for sexually assaulting his 17-year-old relative and sentenced him to seven years of imprisonment.
The verdict was delivered yesterday by the sixth Additional District and Sessions court Judge S H Pushpanjali Devi.
The accused identified as Chandappa, enticed the girl to accompany him on pretext of getting her a job on May 14, 2012. He then took her to an isolated place and raped her, following which he was arrested two days later.
The court examined a total 13 witnesses including the girl and her mother, and concluded that the prosecution had succeeded in proving the charges levelled against Chandappa, despite the fact that girl's father turned hostile before the court.
This is the first conviction by the sixth Additional District and Sessions court set up in January, exclusively for conducting speedy trial and quick disposal of cases of sexual assault on women. The court is now trying as many as 64 such cases.
