The woman, in her 20s, was being harassed by her husband's brother, who tried to get close to her and would touch her inappropriately, they said.
Around a fortnight ago, she told her husband about it. Her husband then scolded his brother and told him to stay away from his wife, the police said, adding he even slapped his brother and threatened to send him back to their native village if he did not mend his ways.
The accused was enraged by this and before leaving his elder brother's home had threatened his sister-in-law that he would teach her a lesson, they said.
On Sunday, when the woman's husband, who works as a private taxi driver, had gone to Gorakhpur, and she was alone at home, the accused allegedly forced himself on her, a senior police officer said.
