A man has been arrested for allegedly attempting to rape his sister-in-law, then stabbing her and trying to throw her off the second floor of a building in northwest Delhi's Bharat Nagar, as she had resisted his advances, the police said today.
The woman, in her 20s, was being harassed by her husband's brother, who tried to get close to her and would touch her inappropriately, they said.
Around a fortnight ago, she told her husband about it. Her husband then scolded his brother and told him to stay away from his wife, the police said, adding he even slapped his brother and threatened to send him back to their native village if he did not mend his ways.
The accused, however, told his elder brother that he was being wrongly accused, the police said.
The accused was enraged by this and before leaving his elder brother's home had threatened his sister-in-law that he would teach her a lesson, they said.
On Sunday, when the woman's husband, who works as a private taxi driver, had gone to Gorakhpur, and she was alone at home, the accused allegedly forced himself on her, a senior police officer said.

When she resisted his attempts, he punched her and attacked her with a knife. She sustained around seven to eight stab wounds on her hands and face, the officer said.
The woman tried to escape but the accused caught hold of her and tried to throw her off the window of the second floor house. On hearing her cries, two people, living on the first floor of the building rescued her, the police said.
The neighbours caught hold of the accused and handed him over to the police, they said.
