A man was arrested on Monday for allegedly growing poppy plants in his field in Himachal Pradesh's Sirmaur district, a police official said.
Following a tip-off, a police team raided fields owned by one Harbans in Khara village of Nahan area and recovered 1,623 poppy plants, said Additional Superintendent of Police, Sirmaur, V S Thakur.
He said after inspecting the plants, it appeared the extraction of opium was to begin in the coming weeks.
A case has been registered against Harbans under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in Paonta Sahib police station and further investigation is underway, the officer added.
