Man held for smuggling gold of over Rs 1 crore at IGI

A man was arrested today for allegedly trying to smuggle gold bars valuing over Rs one crore into the country at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport here.
Over 4 kg gold bars were concealed in specially designed pocket of his trouser, a custom official said.
Acting on intelligence, custom officials intercepted the man after his arrival from Singapore here.
"On detailed examination of his baggage, nothing objectionable was found. But on his personal search, 31 pieces of gold bars weighing 4077.5 grams (4 kgs) were recovered which was concealed in specially designed pocket of his trouser," the custom official said.
The total value of gold bars is assessed to be Rs 1.15 crore, he said.
The gold was seized and the passenger has been arrested.
"Further investigations are in progress," the official said.
On August 17, two passengers were arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle gold valuing about Rs 55 lakh at the IGI airport in separate incidents.
