A person raised an alarm when he saw the accused (name not disclosed) while he a trying to dislodge the idol of Lord Dattatreya for the pedestal at a temple in Nadinaka area of Bhiwandi yesterday, Nizampura police station sub-inspector V B Virnak said.
In a bid to escape, the accused fell while running and sustained head injuries. He was caught by locals and handed over to Nizampura police, she said.
The accused was arrested and charged under sections 379 (theft) and 511 (attempting to commit offences) of the IPC, Virnak said, adding that police are also trying to trace his past criminal record as an offence was earlier registered against him with the Bhiwandi police.
