Man held with 92 gm mephodrone worth Rs 2.73 lakh

A man was arrested here for allegedly supplying narcotics substance Mephedrone worth Rs 2.73 lakh, Gujarat Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) said today.
A state ATS team nabbed a man identified as Virendra Patel alias Sonu King from Ashram road area yesterday and seized 91.23 gram of mephedrone drug, commonly known as MD or Meow Meow, from him, a statement issued by ATS said.
Market price of the seized drug is around Rs 2.73 lakh, it said.
Primary investigation revealed that Patel, who hails from Rancharada village of Gandhinagar district, has been into illegal drug supplying business in the city for about two years.
He used to buy the drug from Bandra and Andheri areas in Mumbai, and Patwa Sheri, old city area here and supplied it mainly to college students, the statement said, adding, mephedrone is popular among youngsters as it is used as an ecstasy drug that can be consumed by snorting.
A case has been registered against Patel under Sections 22 and 23 of NDPS Act.
The Centre in February this year banned mephedrone by issuing a notification, following which it was included under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS) later in February by the state government, it added.
A plea has also been filed in the Gujarat High court that mephedrone was allegedly being sold openly near schools and colleges in the city and demanded direction to the state government to curb menace of the drug.
