Man held with gold bars worth over Rs one cr at IGI airport

A 24-year-old man was arrested today for allegedly smuggling into the country gold bars valuing over Rs one crore at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport here.
The accused, who hails from Alipur in Karnataka, was intercepted by customs officials after his arrival from Bangkok.
On thorough checking, four gold bars were found in his hand baggage. "Each of the four gold bars were found wrapped inside white colour tape. The recovered gold bars totally weighed 4,000 grams (4 kgs) and was collectively valued at Rs 1.04 crore," a press release issued by the customs said.
The passenger was arrested and gold bars were seized, it said.
The accused was to board a flight to Singapore, official sources said.
He has been sent to Tihar jail under judicial custody till December 4, they said, adding the matter is being probed further.
