The Customs Department today held a Mumbai-based man at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport here, with gold bars of one kilogram worth an estimated at Rs 26.90 lakh, Customs officials said.
"A Mumbai-based resident identified as Mukesh Satdev Chelani was caught with six smuggled gold bars weighing around 1,000 grams by the Customs' Airport officers at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Air port," an official said.
Chelani arrived from Delhi on Air India flight number AI 019 and had concealed all six gold bars in his rectum, he said.
Having found Chelani's movements suspicious, a Customs team examined him and seized the hidden gold bars, he said.
As per a prima facie inquiry, gold bars were collected from an international passenger, the official said, adding that an investigation is on.
