The incident happened on November 15 when James Shemol, a resident of Vasant Kunj area of South Delhi who was standing outside the Embassy, was hit by a Delhi traffic police crane.
"The driver of the crane, identified as Yashpal, a head constable with the Delhi police, had reportedly fled from the spot living the vehicle and an injured Shemol behind," said a police official.
Shemol was then taken to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries on Monday evening.
However, the victim's elder son Varun claimed police are trying to shield the errant driver as his name and the cranes registration number were not mentioned in the FIR. Shemol's body was today handed over to his family.
He is survived by two wives and three sons. Of late, he had been staying with his second wife. His first wife also stays in Vasant Kunj.
