A 25-year-old convict has died at state-run J J Hospital here while undergoing treatment for asthma, police said Tuesday.
Vakeel Ahmad Sayyad, convicted in a mobile phone theft case, died in the hospital in Central Mumbai Saturday, an official said.
He was serving a three-month prison term at Byculla jail here since February 21, said Santosh Bagve, senior police inspector of Nagpada.
Vakeel was arrested by the Vashi Railway Police in the theft case, he said.
On Friday, he was admitted to the hospital for treatment of asthma but succumbed to the illness the next day, the official said.
However, Sayyad's family members alleged he died due to excessive collection of blood from his body by the hospital staff under the pretext of conducting medical tests, said Bagve.
He said the deceased's family members have not taken possession of the body as post-mortem is yet to be completed.
