The incident took place around 5 AM when the accused Aman Kumar Kar (44) attacked his wife Deepa (42) while she was sleeping with her 14-year-old niece Manisha.
"As Manisha raised an alarm seeing the murder of her aunt, Aman fled to the second floor of her house and tried to commit suicide by hanging himself. But his attempt failed as the grill broke," said a police official.
The accused then consumed a poisonous substance in a bid to end his life. In the meantime, locals gathered at the residence hearing Manisha's cry and informed police about the incident, the official said.
Initial investigations suggested that there was a property dispute between Aman and his wife and they were to take divorce tomorrow (Friday).
