With acid attacks on women on the rise in Punjab province despite the introduction of a new law that provides strict punishment for perpetrators, rights activists believe the sentences handed down by an anti-terrorism court in Lahore yesterday will go a long way in deterring such crimes.
The court ordered Muhammad Danish and his mother to Nasreen Bibi to pay Rs 1.02 million as compensation to the victim. They were also fined Rs 50,000 each.
According to the prosecution, Nasreen and the victim worked at the same factory in Manga Mandi area.
When the victim spent a night at Nasreen's home, Danish tried to rape her. When the victim resisted, Danish threw acid on her face. As a result, the victim lost an eye.
During the trial, the prosecution produced several witnesses and clinching evidence against the accused.
The prosecution further told the judge that the victim would face problems in getting married due to her injuries.
