A 52-year-old man was mowed down by an over speeding car in southeast Delhi's Jaitpur area while his 20-year-old niece, who was accompanying him, had a narrow escape, police said today.
The incident took place around 10.30 PM when Raj Mangal Singh and his niece Pinki were walking towards their home from a clinic located in Jaitpur area, police said.
"When the duo reached Tanky Road, they were hit by a speeding car. Singh was thrown in the air and his head hit the footpath as he fell down. Pinky was also hit but she sustained minor injuries and was discharged from the hospital following treatment," said a senior police official.
According to police, there were four occupants in the car and three of them managed to escape from the spot. The fourth one, identified as Keshav Kumar, was caught by a mob and was beaten up and later handed over to police.
Meanwhile, the angry passersby also torched the vehicle that hit Singh.
Kumar told police that he wasn't driving the vehicle and that there were three other occupants in the car and one of them was behind the wheel, police said.
"A case under relevant sections of the IPC has been registered at Jaitpur police station. The accused will be arrested soon. The occupants of the car might have been in an inebriated state," the official said.
Singh was working with BSES and had gone to the clinic to get medicines for his wife, who is suffering from chikungunya. Pinky had come down to her uncle's place from Bihar.
