The accused, Avinash Kumar, a resident of Jalandhar in Punjab, was intercepted at the city airport on suspicion.
"On checking, he was found to be carrying gold bars, chains and 'kada' (bangles) weighing around 1,756 grams and valued at Rs 48,57,676," he said, adding, Kumar was coming from Mumbai by an Air India flight.
To hoodwink customs officials, the passenger had concealed the gold bars in his rectum, he said.
