A Delhi court has sentenced a man to over two years of rigorous imprisonment for possessing over 13 kg of poppy straw in 2012.
Special Judge Shail Jain convicted Dilbag Singh, a Punjab resident, under various sections of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on him.
"On proper and careful evaluation of the facts and events of the case, I conclude that testimony of prosecution witnesses is consistent and trustworthy.
"Dilbag was found in possession of 13.5 kgs of poppy straw. Therefore, he is held guilty," the judge said.
The court, while sentencing Dilbag, noted that he has been in jail for over two years.
"Considering the fact that convict has already suffered incarceration for 2 years, 2 months and 8 days and quantity of contraband i.E. Poppy straw recovered from convict is 13.5 kgs, which is intermediate quantity, hence, convict Dilbag Singh is sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment for two years and two months..." it said.
