Man shot dead by SI: HC adjourns petition to tomorrow

Madras High Court adjourned to tomorrow a petition seeking a direction to the Home Secretary to appoint a team of doctors to conduct the post-mortem on a man, shot dead by a Sub-Inspector after he stabbed him at a police station in Ramanathapuram District on October 14.
Justice T S Sivagnanam before whom the petition filed by Mohamed Aliyar, a relative of the deceased came up for hearing posted the matter to tomorrow.
When the matter came up today, the Additional Government Pleader submitted that Sub-Inspector Kalidoss was also injured. When the Judge questioned the AGP on the nature of the injury, petitioner's counsel Sankara Subbu intervened and alleged that the injury was self inflicted by the SI.
AGP Vijayakumar submitted that the Advocate General would appear on behalf of the state and requested that the case be posted to tomorrow, to which the judge agreed.
The petitioner alleged that Syed Mohamed was tortured and ultimately done to death by the SI by inflicting firearm injuries on the body at S A Pattinam police station on October 14.
He also alleged that the murder is custodial torture leading to death and requires serious consideration by the Home Secretary "but he and his men are sitting high over the matter."

Syed Mohamed (30) was taken to police station on October 14 on a complaint of extorting money from the public, was shot dead by Sub-Inspector Kalidoss after he stabbed him while being questioned. The SI was hospitalised.
Police had said the SI opened two rounds of fire in self defence at point blank range, killing Mohammed on the spot.
Mohammed, who was reportedly inebriated, had caused panic in S A Pattinam market area, wielding a knife and demanding money from traders and passers. The SI spotted him when he was fighting with a man. Both were taken to the station on complaints from people.
