Panchram Rathiya wasattackedby a wildelephantthis morning in Teganmar forest underKartalapolice station limits,Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Korba division Vivekanand Jha said.
As per preliminary information, the victim was going home through the forest after carrying out farming work in his fields when he came face-to-face with a huge herd of wild elephants.
One of them suddenly attacked Rathiya, a native of Botli village, killing him on the spot. Police personnel and forest officials rushed to the scene, he said.
The kin of the deceased have been given an instant relief amount of Rs 25,000 and theywill be given Rs 3.75 lakh as compensation as per government policy after the completion all formalities in this connection, he added.

Besides, forest staff have been directed to keep an eye on the movement of pachyderms in order to avoid human-elephant conflicts, he added.
The thick forested northern Chhattisgarh, comprising Surguja, Korba, Raigarh, Jashpur and Korea districts, is notorious for incidents of human-animal conflict.
The region has witnessed several killings of tribals and widespread damage to houses and crops by elephantsin past.
