Man who escaped from police station held

A 25-year-old man, who escaped from a suburban police station with the chair he was handcuffed to last week, has been arrested.
"The accused Siraj Sheikh was arrested by the sleuths of Samta Nagar police station from Ghodbunder Road in Thane at around 11.30 PM last night," DCP (Detection) Dhananjay Kulkarni said here today.
Sheikh had sneaked out of Samata Nagar police station in Kandivali on November 21 along with the chair to which he was handcuffed to, causing embarrassment to police.
"Subsequently, a manhunt was launched for Sheikh and an inquiry was initiated against the concerned police personnel to ascertain the negligence," said Samata Nagar police station senior inspector Dilip Yadav.
Sheikh, a resident of Mira Road, had been apprehended on Friday night in connection with a kidnapping case and brought to the police station.
"His right hand was cuffed to a plastic chair. Around 5 AM on Saturday, when a constable went to check on him, he found Sheikh was missing with the chair," said Yadav.
The incident was captured on CCTV of the police station. The footage showed that he sneaked out of the police station by carrying the chair in his hands with the handcuff.
Police have additionally slapped section 224 (resistance or obstruction by a person to his lawful apprehension) of IPC against Sheikh.
