A 28-year-old man who had allegedly planned his brother's escape from the custody of Haryana Police earlier this month has been arrested by the Special Cell of Delhi Police.
The accused, identified as Preetpal Singh, was nabbed from southwest Delhi's Najafgarh area on Thursday following a tip off. Police have also seized a country-made pistol and two cartridges from him.
Preetpal and accomplice Jai Kumar stage-managed an escape plan for his brother Phool Singh, arrested by Haryana police in connection with an abduction case.
According to the plan, Phool pretended to be ill and was brought to Maulana Medical College, Nuh for treatment by four police personnel from Bhondsi Jail on December 3.
On their way back to jail, after getting down from a roadways bus, the policemen and Phool were waiting for an auto when they were offered a lift by Phool's brother and Kumar in their Innova car.
As soon as Phool and one of the police personnel escorting him got into the car, Preetpal drove away the vehicle, leaving the other three policemen on the roadside, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Rajiv Ranjan said.
Later, Preetpal and Kumar took out their weapons and threatened Constable Devender and got Phool's handcuffs removed at gunpoint. The accused later fled after dumping the policeman near Sector 56 of Gurgaon at about 12:30 PM.
Phool Singh is wanted in connection with more than 32 cases of murder, robbery, dacoity among others, Ranjan said.
