Mandatory fencing on expressways to check accidents by animals

To check the high number of road accidents caused by stray animals, government has decided to make fencing mandatory on either side of expressways.
"Fencing is made mandatory on either side of expressways also," Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways, Pon Radhakrishnan told Rajya Sabha in a written reply.
He said as per the manuals regarding specifications for widening of roads, fencing has already been made mandatory.
"Fencing at the edge of Right of Way is included in the strandard cross sections in the IRC publications 'Manual for Specifications & Standard for four laning of Highways through Pulbic Private Partnership (PPP)' and 'Manual for specifications & standard for six laning of highway through PPP," Radhakrishnan said.

The minister said 1,892 road accidents were caused in 2014 on national highways due to animals.
The number of such accidents in 2013 was 3,103 while in 2012 it was 2,739.
